Quick Opening Closures for High Pressure Applications
Quick opening closures are engineered access systems used on pressure-containing equipment where frequent inspection and maintenance are required. They provide faster access than conventional bolted flange arrangements while maintaining a secure pressure boundary during operation.
Where Are Quick Opening Closures Used?
In oil and gas facilities, quick opening closures can be found on:
Pig launchers and receivers
Filter vessels
Filter separators
Scrubbers
Knockout drums
Process filters
Other pressure vessels
How Does a High Pressure Closure Work?
A high pressure closure typically consists of a pressure-rated door, hub, gasket, locking mechanism, hinge, and pressure-warning device.
When the door is correctly positioned, the locking mechanism is fully engaged. During operation, internal pressure acts against the closure head while the locking components transfer the load into the vessel structure.
The gasket provides the pressure-tight seal.
Why Is Uniform Locking Important?
Every locking segment or clamp must engage correctly. Uneven engagement can affect gasket compression and create leakage or excessive stress on retaining components.
The closure should therefore be inspected before pressurization.
How Should Operators Open the Closure?
Safe opening requires a controlled sequence:
Stop the process.
Isolate the vessel.
Drain or vent the equipment.
Verify zero pressure.
Check for trapped fluid or blocked vents.
Release the safety mechanism.
Disengage the closure.
A pressure-warning device provides an additional safety indication but should not replace formal isolation and depressurization procedures.
How Should Buyers Select a Closure?
Consider pressure and temperature, vessel diameter, connection type, material compatibility, process conditions, opening frequency, applicable ASME requirements, and available safety features.
SG INDUSTRIAL INC. manufactures engineered high pressure closure systems for oil and gas and process applications, including clamp-type and segmented-band designs.
